About Omar

What's New Nov 26, 2008 5:00 am

Like so many of my fellow Canadians, I came to Canada at a young age, and right from that time, I knew this country was my home.

Like so many of my fellow Canadians, I came to Canada at a young age, and right from that time, I knew this country was my home.

From that early time in my life, I decided to access as many career and educational opportunities that I could. To this end, I graduated from Ryerson University with a degree in Mechanical Engineering in 1994.

Following this, in the year 2000, I graduated with my Masters in Business Administration (MBA) from York University.

I am fortunate to have built a solid and successful professional resume. My work experience includes an entrepreneurial business, a medium-sized national Canadian contractor, and for the last six years, I’ve worked with one of the largest and most well known corporations in the world, GE.

During the past 12 years, I have worked in various capacities and carried different responsibilities, including: Quality assurance, project management, sales, sales management, contract management, and management of a complete department handling a global mandate.

This combination of professional and educational experience has earned me strong analytical abilities and management skills.

Representing the riding of Mississauga-Erindale is something I take seriously, and I will use all of my professional and educational experience to carry out this role responsibly, thoughtfully and effectively.

Testing Text Formatting # 2

What's New Nov 23, 2008 1:29 pm

There are many cases to test ... text formattign is complicated issue. please report any errors or warnings

Like many Canadians, I am an immigrant, choosing this country as my new home when I was a young man.  Being young in a new place, without the traditional support of family or friends, is not an easy road to travel.  However, my youth, combined with the opportunities offered by Canada, convinced me that anything was possible here.  As the saying goes, the sky was the limit!
Of course, taking advantage of new opportunities is not always easy; it requires hard work, dedication and patience.  I worked a number of jobs, including the graveyard shift at a doughnut shop, to put myself through school.  The long hours studying and working paid off when I graduated from Ryerson University with a degree in Mechanical Engineering.  To this day I look at the humble doughnut as both an enduring symbol of Canadiana and one of the keys to my pursuing the wonderful opportunities offered by Canada.
A number of years later I later went on to earn my Master of Business Administration degree from York University.  I am a firm believer in the power of education, both in terms of personal growth and as the foundation for economic opportunity and prosperity. Before becoming a Member of Parliament I had worked in a variety of businesses both large and small, including one of the largest companies in the world specializing in the development of energy projects across the world.  I bring these experiences and the practical lessons learned from them with me every day, whether at work on Parliament Hill in Ottawa, or in our communities and neighbourhoods across Mississauga-Erindale.   My work has included a number of roles, including quality assurance, sales, business development, and management of a global team.  Most of all, I learned the importance of people, teamwork and delivering excellent products and services.I was first elected as a Member of Parliament for Mississauga-Erindale in January 2006.  It was, and continues to be, a great honour and privilege to represent this community in Ottawa.  During the time that I have been in Ottawa, I have been a member of the Government Operations and Expenditures Committee of the House of Commons and the Associate Critic for Social Development for the Liberal Party.  In January 2007, I became the Critic for Citizenship and Immigration and was a member of the House of Commons’ Committee for Citizenship and Immigration.  In the fall of 2007, I was appointed Critic for Natural Resources and am a member of that Standing Committee as well.
From the humble doughnut to Parliament Hill – this great country does not cease to amaze me.
